Zusammenfassung: | <p>Matteo Sassano detto Matteuccio (1667-1737), also known as «il rosignuolo di Napoli», was one of the most famous European musicians in his time as well as one of the most controversial servants of the Spanish monarchs Charles II and Maria Anna of Neuburg. Nonetheless, there are few studies about this castrato and elements of his biography outside Naples remain unknown. His arrival at the Spanish court was related to the queen's musical taste, which influenced her husband. Additionally, the promotion of foreign artists was a strategy for strengthening the public image of the king. This article gathers relevant information published and unpublished about his residence in Madrid between 1698 and 1701, and some hypotheses are formulated regarding his musical service to the Royal Chamber during the last year of Charles II’s life.</p> |
