Zusammenfassung: | <p>The melodramas of Gabriello Chiabrera have received little attention today, perhaps with the exception of his first opera, Il rapimento di Cefalo (1600). He was, however, the most prolific writer of «operistic» libretti in the first half of the 17th century, writing more than fifteen melodramas, all influenced by the new genre of opera. Many of these libretti were not made conceived as favole or operas, but as smaller works called favolette, which were also fully sung, influenced by the new operatic conventions. The story is similar for his intermedii and vegghie, a genre rarely studied. This article intends to resolve the distinctions among these different genres, which are often confused by scholars. As shall be demonstrated, this is largely due to the way in which Chiabrera composed new melodramas by enlarging and reducing previous melodramas. To do this, his entire melodramatic production is analyzed for the first time, showing the genealogy of his works and resolving various misunderstandings. At the same time, this article aims to offer a more complex view of the first decades of the genre and the rich context in which it was developed.</p> |
