Zusammenfassung: |
Around the middle of the 19th century, the attitude towards Hispano-Islamic music changed dramatically in Spain, both in the realm of musical composition and that of musical historiography. In contrast with Edward Said’s thesis, according to which Orientalism is essentially an instrument for domination, Spanish musicians and historiographers themselves voluntarily re-created a Hispano-Islamic imagery that was afterwards assimilated as an essential part of the Spanish national culture. This paper analyzes the historiographical foundations of this novel vision by studying some of the influential texts written by Mariano Soriano Fuertes. First, I describe Soriano’s approach to Hispano-Islamic music, assessing, at the same time, how he was able to create a historiographic paradigm that was imitated by subsequent historians. Then, I study the sources used by Soriano, and analyze the accommodations he was forced to make when integrating Enlightenment ideas into a nationalist discourse. Finally, I provide an interpretation of his discourse while taking into account the circumstances of the time, bringing to surface its presumable political implications.
|
