Recognized since the 19th century, Haydn and Mozart's superiority on their best known contemporaries is undeniably due to the renewed interest that both composers showed for the counterpoint from the 1780s, that is to say during their great period of maturity. Dialogued and rhythmic with Haydn, more all-encompassing with Mozart, fusion of Haydn's counterpoint and Johann Sebastien Bach's linear counterpoint, their counterpoint broke not only with the academic tradition inherited from Fux or from the luxuriant Baroque, but also with rudimentary counterpoint of galant style. Thus, with these learned and original techniques of counterpoint, both succeeded in creating a musical language the richness of which was unknown before.
|
