Zusammenfassung: |
This essay, by a neurosurgeon who has frequently been a witness to tragedy, supports the general consensus among musicologists that music written in the minor mode has a unique relationship to the development of melancholy. This mode has been shown by experiment to be more prone to elicit feelings of sadness than music written in the major mode. The quality of the sound of the wail of honest grief has a remarkable closeness in "feel" to much of the music written in the minor mode with its downward flow. The many attempts of physicians, psychologists, philosophers, and musicologists to explain this phenomenon are well documented, their scientific perspectives being concisely described, compared, and placed in cultural context. The author infers that the affective tendency of the music in the minor mode is probably not explainable as a function of physics, nor acculturation, but is rather the result of a close similarity between the "feel" of sound and the natural wailing quality of the human voice during moments of grief.
|
