Zusammenfassung: | Evaluation of theoretical sources alone is unsatisfactory for practitioners and useless for editors. Selected facsimile examples from Bach's manuscripts (including string and wind parts) help clarify rules underlying notation (intervallic criteria, rhythm, note values). Compilation of the most frequent instructions reveals a qualitative and quantitative consistency from the early works to the late. Certain articulation figures appear very frequently in the cantatas and Masses. There are various articulation models for identical constellations (horizontal and vertical variability). Often in revising his own drafts for keyboard instruments, Bach omitted instructions that had been motivated by considerations of playing technique. Between the various autograph revisions, changes in articulation can be verified. |
